About the event

Clutter Busting with Jane:

Simplicity as an Access to Clarity, Purpose and Joy

Clutter abounds! Visible or hidden–in closets and drawers, our basements and garages, piles of mail and paper work on our desktops, and in digital form on our computers–robbing us of our peace of mind, happiness, and sense of purpose.   Join us for this five-session series offered over the course of eight weeks in which we’ll work together to clear out clutter in our lives, providing space for more life-giving possibilities to emerge. We’ll explore the Salesian virtue of simplicity as an access to living more authentic lives of clarity, purpose, and joy.

Session Dates and Times (Central Standard Time):

Session 1 - February 19, 6:30pm - 8:30pm

Session 2 - March 4, 6:30pm - 8:00pm

Session 3 - March 18, 6:30pm - 8:00pm

Session 4 - April 1, 6:30pm - 8:00pm

Session 5 - April 15, 6:30pm - 8:30pm, in-person option

This series is designed to provide inspiration and supportive accountability, with regular check-in sessions on Zoom that will include small group breakouts. There will also be an opportunity to participate in a private online group to share your clutter busting experiences, including before and after photos, if you wish.

We will begin our collective de-cluttering adventure with a two-hour session on Monday, February 19. The next three online meetings will be 90-minutes in length. During these meetings, new material will be presented and discussed, and participants will be able to check-in with breakout groups, including sharing results of the previous week and goals for the coming week. We will end with another two-hour session that will be hybrid, with an option for participants to meet in-person at the St Jane House. At this final session, those who gather in-person will have an opportunity to release a particular item in a more ritualized way, by tossing it in a bonfire. If you are participating online, you can do some variation of a ritualized release of an item at home, if you wish. The last time we offered this series, this was one of the most powerful elements of the program. Following this activity, we will close with a celebration that will include sharing our learnings.

The series will draw inspiration from the book Clutter Busting: Letting Go of What’s Holding You Back by Brooks Palmer, New York Times Best Seller The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning by Margareta Magnusson, as well as other de-cluttering resources.

"Piles of junk in garages and closets, overflowing papers on desks, items unused for years, masses of unanswered email, clothing never worn, useless gifts that collect dust – all these things," says Brooks Palmer, "come weighted with shame and guilt and have a suffocating effect on spirit and soul." In his insightful book, Clutter Busting: Letting Go of What's Holding You Back, Palmer shows how to get rid of the objects that crowd our lives. By tossing out these unneeded items, we are also eliminating their negative influences, freeing energy, and unlocking our potential.

To assure accessibility for all, the series is offered at different suggested donation levels:

Northside community members: $25-50 ($5-10 per session)

Broader community members: $50-100 ($10-20 per session)

Sustaining Patron: $125+ ($25+ per session)

Your generous contributions help us to make this and other programs available for those with fewer financial resources. If finances are an issue for you, please let us know. We don't want it to be a barrier to anyone's participation.
