Transforming Kim's Garden Space

Kim Ambers is a beloved member of the St. Jane House community who has dedicated her life to serving others. As a child, she organized "summer school" in her family home, providing neighborhood children with lessons, homework, and even recess in the backyard. It was an early sign of a calling that would shape her life.

For more than 35 years, she has worked in public education, including 21 years at Lucy Craft Laney Community School, helping some of the students who need the most support. She has also cared for her own three children, her grandmother, her disabled uncle, and countless young people in our Northside community.

Alongside a lifetime of giving, Kim has also endured profound loss, including the tragic murder of her son Richard ten years ago and the near-fatal car accident that left her daughter, Rashaunea fighting for her life in 2022. Miraculously, through shear determination and the grace of God, "Rashi" recovered and graduated from the University of St Thomas two years later.

Today, Kim's backyard reflects a decade of hardship and deferred maintenance. A flooded basement, a fallen tree, and the ongoing responsibilities of caregiving have left the space in need of restoration. A group of volunteers from the St. Jane House community and beyond is coming together to help transform her yard into a place of beauty, peace, and renewal—a space that can once again bring joy and comfort as it did in her childhood, rather than stress and feelings of being overwhelmed.
